6 Ways to Make Kids’ Clothes Last Longer with Method

Today’s parents have to be more budget-conscious than ever. With the price of clothes today, and the cost of college tomorrow, the more money we can save the happier everyone’s future will be. We know our kids have to have to clothes, but here are some ways to make those clothes last longer and save you some money in the process!

Choose Fabrics that Last:  Choosing clothes with lacey fabric embellishments is great for special occasions, but not for everyday play! Our 8-year-old would play baseball and soccer in a prom dress if we would let her, but it wouldn’t be long before lacy bits were torn or damaged. Choose natural fabrics, like cotton, for kids’ play clothes. The fabric breathes, it’s easier to care for, and quality cotton will last!  Choose teen’s clothes carefully too!  As your teen moves into adult sizes (and stop growing so quickly!), you can start to build a wardrobe with more quality pieces that will last! Choosing washable, wearable fabrics is so important, which is why Method laundry detergent paired with ASOS to create easy-to-clean, functional fashion pieces.

Pre-treat Stains:  One of the things I love about watching the kids play is the reckless abandon with which they throw themselves into their activities. From imaginary softball (the girls played last week without a bat, ball, or glove), to the monkey bars at the playground where they both think they are the next ninja warrior, kids play full speed. When that irresistible force meets the immovable object known as the ground, stains result. Pre-treat with method 4x detergent to keep clothes stain-free and in the lineup for the next playground adventure

Hang to Dry:  Dryer trip after dryer trip can loosen up fabrics, fade bright colors, and damage fabrics. After washing, we prefer to hang our clothes on the drying rack to air dry. It saves the fabric, and it cuts the electric and gas bill by not having to run the dryer so often. In a house with active girls, we do a lot of laundry and this saves clothes from premature wear.

Separate fabrics:  It’s an easy concept, but sometimes the temptation is to throw shirts and dresses in with jeans. Fight the urge! By washing shirts with shirts, and delicate dresses with dresses you cut down on the damage heavier fabrics do to lighter ones. Only wash jeans in the same load with other jeans. Keeping your kids’ shirts and dresses separate from the jeans keeps the fabric newer longer, and avoids beating up dresses.

Use an Effective, but Gentle Detergent:  method 4x detergent is a great detergent that cleans as effectively as the kids stain! It works great in cold water which saves on heating costs, it gets out dirt and stains, plus it’s hypoallergenic and biodegradable formula is gentle on the kid’s skin. Share with Siblings:  If you have followed steps 1-5, then you are going to have clothes that last a lot longer than you are used to. Clothes that last longer can be used over time – and that means they can be shared with younger siblings. We keep a closet of clothes from our oldest daughter that are awaiting rebirth as outfits for our youngest! This is an amazing money-saver!

I just bought some Method detergent. I have been using their dish soaps because I love that they use less chemicals than other brands. These are great tips…even for washing my own clothes! I need to start hanging my clothes more for sure but I’m always waiting till the last minute to do laundry.

Wow! I didn’t realize Method had such a concentrated version of their detergent. I typically use Trader Joe’s because of the cost. But, with the coupon, this is definitely worth a try. Thanks again!

These tips are so helpful! My son is so hard on clothes that it’s hard to keep them for any length of time. But to help save, I always pretreat! It extends our use of the clothes so much.
