The first rule about Soup Club is not that you don’t talk about Soup Club. While not stated, I think the first rule about Soup Club is that you share with your friends. The Soup Club Cookbook includes great stories and a glimpse into the authors’ lives as they share soup among families and friends. In a way, the book is less about soup and more about building a community that happens to be centered around soup.
One thing that I always look for in a cookbook is whether or not the ingredients are accessible. While I live in the country, I do live near a major metro area where I do most of my shopping. However, if you ask me to find squid ears or other strange ingredients (I don’t think squid even have ears?), I’m not going to be making your recipe. I love that the recipes in The Soup Club Cookbook are easily accessible, even though these ladies live in the food capital of the world.
In terms of recipes, not only are there some amazing yummy soup recipes, there are salads, sides, main dishes, and snacks. The recipes are easy to follow and most don’t need advanced cooking techniques. They do make A TON of soup because these are recipes that aren’t meant to be shared. If you are soup-selfish, that’s ok – just freeze your soups and be the envy of your coworkers at lunch!
