It’s the most wonderful time of the year! No, not Christmas (although it is also the most wonderful time of the year – I love holidays, what can I say?), HALLOWEEN! Halloween is one of my FAVORITE times of the year, and it’s especially my favorite time of the year to decorate, and we do a LOT of that around my house!  It’s also such a great time to give gifts – have you seen the BOO baskets, bags, and buckets that are popping up everywhere?  They are such a fun way to remind people how much you appreciate them and spread around some treats to those you appreciate in your life.

This year, in addition to giving my coworkers and neighbors treats, I wanted to create a special BOO bucket for my chiropractor and her staff. For those of you that read Parent Palace regularly, you will know that I’ve been trying to refocus on my health, get some migraines under control, and my chiropractor has been a big part of that! And what better way to show her and her staff that I appreciate them than an awesome bone-themed BOO bucket!  This was SO much fun to make – I’m going to walk you right through it so you can recreate it on your own.  First, you need to buy some candy in BULK.  BOOing is so much fun that you are going to want to do it over and over again, and you can save so much by buying in bulk.  I’m a Sam’s Club member, so I know right where to go when I need my favorite products in bulk!

Check out this AMAZING bulk pack I found!  The MARS® Bat Bag has 450 pieces of my FAVORITE MARS® and Wrigley products, and with that large bag I will be able to make BOO bags and buckets to my heart’s content, not break my budget, and still have enough left over to keep the kids happy on Halloween night! Look for this specially marked bag at Sam’s Club, along with the MARS® Mad Scientist 290 count package if you’ll only be doing a little bit of BOOing.

Now that I was stocked up on candy, it was time to get creative with my bone-themed BOO bucket.  I started with a silver metal tub that I picked up at a local craft store.  Then, I tore antique-looking strips of scrapbook patterned paper and glued it down in sections along the bucket.  Then, I painted it over with SEVERAL coats of antique matte waterproof sealer to give it a worn and old-timey look.  Then, I used black acrylic paint to go over the remaining silver part – I didn’t get too fussy about it..I let it streak and rubbed it around (including on the paper) to enhance the “old” look to it.

Then, I hot glued some “creepy cloth” around the outside of the bucket, and embellished the outside with bones and skulls I picked up from a seasonal Halloween store.  Seriously, how cute are these little guys?

Now that the inside of the BOO bucket is ready, it’s time to fill the inside.  I couldn’t make a bone-themed BOO bucket without a skeleton, so after filling the bottom with creepy cobwebs, I added a grinning friend!  I put little dots of hot glue on his wrists so he would stay in place.

Then, I added a BOO-YA (how perfect!) towel and a skull scented soap that I also picked up from the seasonal Halloween store, and then filled with candy from my MARS® Bat Bag!

Then, I wanted to add some yummy homemade treats, and what’s more perfect than some brownies featuring some of my FAVORITE candy from my MARS® Bat Bag – TWIX®! These brownies are thick, fudgey, and the caramel from the crushed TWIX® makes them absolutely decadent!

BOO Bucket TWIX® Brownies

Ingredients

  • 2 sticks unsalted butter, melted in the microwave
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 4 eggs
  • 3/4 cup cocoa
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 20 mini chopped TWIX® candy bars; I put half in my food processor to get a finer chop, and chopped half by hand to get a rougher chop and bigger chunks.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray a 9 x 13 pan with cooking spray.
  2. In a stand mixer or with a hand mixer, combine butter, sugar and vanilla.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, beating well until combined after you add each egg.
  4. Add cocoa and mix until blended.
  5. Add flour, baking powder and salt, and mix until blended.
  6. With a spoon, stir in TWIX® candy and pour into pan.
  7. Bake for approximately 45 minutes (I start checking at 35 minutes) until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool, cut into squares, and put into treat bags.
