At my day job, we just got finished celebrating Environmental Awareness week – it’s a great week to get educated about how we can make a difference in a sustainable workplace. I learned a lot and it really got me thinking about how we can be more sustainable at home.
One of the biggest elements of our carbon footprint in our home is our devices and appliances. Which makes it kind of cool that Best Buy offers a large selection of energy-efficient products, including ENERGY STAR® certified electronics and appliances – they too are committed to positively impacting our environment and communities.
The next appliance on my “to buy” list is definitely a washer and dryer, and I know that I will be looking for an ENERGY STAR set – they are better for clothes and the environment! ENERGY STAR washers and dryers save energy, which cuts down my bills, and they also have advanced features that reduce wear and tear on my clothes and make cleaning and drying more effective. Did you know that ENERGY STAR certified washers and dryers are 25% and 20% more efficient?
The impact on the environment is NOT small. Over the lifetime of an ENERGY STAR washer, 33,000 gallons of water and more than 2.5 million BTUs of natural gas are saved! If all clothes washers sold in the U.S. were ENERGY STAR certified, we could prevent more than 19 billion pounds of carbon pollution every single year – this is the equivalent of the emissions from 1.7 million vehicles.
The impact of ENERGY STAR dryers is even more profound – if all clothes dryers in the US sold were ENERGY STAR certified, we could prevent 22 billion pounds of annual carbon pollution, which is equal to the emissions from 2 million vehicles.
They are also FAR better for your clothes. Front-load and advanced top-load clothes washers’ sophisticated wash systems lengthen the life of clothing – which has a HUGE impact on the environment. Many clothes contain polyester, which has a huge impact on the environment, and making our clothes last longer can make a real difference.
If you aren’t convinced, please make sure to visit Best Buy’s blog to learn why ENERGY STAR is the way to go when you are looking at new appliances! And make sure to catch out this super fun video on Energy Star appliances – don’t blame me if you have jazz hands after!
