Did you know that October is Cyber Security Awareness Month?  Just think, a decade ago, this really wouldn’t have been much of a big deal, but now, cyber security is so incredibly important.  It seems like every other day there is a news story that touches on cyber security.

But have you thought about your own cyber security?  Think back – when was the last time you backed up your computer?  If you’re like me, it was, well, never.  And honestly, I know better.  Several years ago I had a major loss – my computer just fried.  I was in law school, and it was two weeks before finals.  Talk about a major panic attack.  It was an awful experience and one that I certainly don’t want to repeat.

While I don’t have law school outlines to protect anymore, I do have something more precious – so, so many family photos.  So I was super exited to get to try out Carbonite, who offers personal and professional cloud backups that RETROACTIVELY back up your computer.  Yep, that’s right, you can go back and automatically back up ALL the documents and photos on your computer. Pretty cool, huh?

Getting the process of safeguarding your families’ documents, photos, and other files safe is easy – but don’t worry, if you need help, there are plenty of directions and also a help line with a dedicated support team to help you out!  You start by installing the program – this is so quick and easy (no credit card required for a trial!)

It tells you right away that you are going to be protecting your family’s memories very soon…next, you back up! The process is really automatic so it’s not hard at all!

This is a shot of my backup beginning – you can see that it is already backing up my family’s precious photos! The backup can take a while, but it runs in the background and didn’t slow down my computer or otherwise cause me any issues.  It just worked behind the scenes, protecting everything that I would want to save if something happened to my computer.  The files are there to restore if I ever have a problem.Carbonite5

But here’s the REALLY cool part.  I often work from home – usually I log in remotely, but sometimes the connection doesn’t work or I otherwise can’t do that and I work off of my computer’s system.  Now, instead of worrying about trying to email files to myself, I can log in to Carbonite once I get to work, and access all my files!  I can even access them on my mobile devices – perfect for a busy working mom like me! And with unlimited cloud backup space and automatic and continuous backup, I don’t have to worry about running out of room.

There are three main Carbonite plans:  Basic, Plus and Prime, with each of them offering a little bit extra.

  • Basic – $59.99/year per computer.  This is what we use – this automatically backs up all of our family’s essentials:  photos, music, documents and more.
  • Plus – $99.99/year per computer.    This gives your more sophisticated protection – it not only automatically backs up your computer, but also your external hard drive, operating system, and software programs.
  • Prime – $149.99/year per computer.  This plan has all the bells and whistles, including automatic video backup and the ability to have a copy of your backup shipped to you anywhere in the United States.  This would be great if you are running a home business!

Right now, Parent Palace readers can take advantage of a great deal through December 31, 2015.  When you sign up for your Carbonite plan, enter the promo code INFLUENCECENTRAL and you will get two additional free months of service after you purchase a subscription plan!  Or, if you’re not quite ready to make the plunge and you want to see how it works, you can get a free trial!

I’m super excited that I don’t have to worry about backing up everything from my daughter’s school work to my family photos – Carbonite has me covered!  What files would you most be upset to lose if your computer crashed?  Let us know in the comments below!

I currently have Carbonite for my phone. It’s so nice to know that it works in the background without me having to remember to back everything up! Which reminds me – I need to go in and delete some pictures!

I am actually just finding out that October is Cyber Security Awareness Month. I think it is very important to protect our documents and family photos. I think that the prime membership is priced really well. Worth every dollar to have ease of mind.

There’s a lot of hacking going on and companies and individuals need to be more aware of these crimes online. It’s great that there’s Carbonite to help us backup our data on our computer. I hope that it’s not too technical for those who can’t understand the technicality and implications.

This year my computer crashed and then my back up crashed. I was devastated. I thought I lost all my pictures. Now, I upload them to Shutterfly when I upload them to iPhoto. Carbonate would definitely put my mind at ease, though!

Carbonite sounds like an amazing back up plan to have for sure. The prime is what all home businesses should have and I love that you can get the back up sent anywhere in the United States.

I can’t remember the last time I backed up my computer. I think it was about 6 months ago. Thanks for the reminder…. I need to do it again.

This sounds like a great service. I recently lost a lot of data on an external hard drive and had to pay big money to get that data recovered! I need to back up my backups from now on! I will check this out for sure!

It’s crazy to think that a decade ago we weren’t even thinking about cyber security but know it’s a MUST! The plus package sounds like something I might need to look into (I love the idea of having something automatically backing up my files <3

I have an external hard drive, but I always forget to back up my photos and documents. My Macbook crashed twice within a few months and had to be wiped cleaned. I lost everything, including photos for sponsored posts that I had not written yet and I had not backed them up. (Yikes!) I need Carbonite in my life. It looks so much easier than messing with that external thing. So much easier!

I never understand people who don’t back up their data multiple times and this product seems like a great way to keep all that important stuff. I especially mind people, it isn’t enough to have one copy – you need to have TWO copies of everything. You never know when you’ll lose your phone have an internal/external harddrive crash, etc.
