Birthday parties around our house are CRAZY!  This year was no exception for my youngest daughter’s birthday!  There were people running around, awesome decorations, food, fun, – it was a madhouse.  While we LOVE these parties, sometimes it’s also nice just to celebrate with family, as a quiet appreciation of our daughter and how much we love her.  So this, year, we decided to plan a family Birthday Pajama Party – just for Katie.  And you can’t have a pajama party without breakfast, but you can’t have a birthday party without cake, so my oldest daughter and I headed to Walmart to see what we could cook up for both decorations and a “cake”.

Of course we hit the “Celebrate” aisle and found a whole COLLECTION of American Greetings Disney Princess decorations! Moms, you’re going to love this – everything is themed and they have SO many products, from cups, plates, napkins (everything you need for a birthday breakfast!) to treat bags (and fun things to fill them with) and beautiful decorations.  American Greetings really knocks it out of the park here…one of my favorite finds was a birthday crown and sash, perfect for my Princess.  Here’s a sneak peek into how adorable she looked in her sash and crown…

Once we had all of our American Greetings party supplies (which was VERY budget-friendly), we were inspired to make our own breakfast cake!  So we grabbed our ingredients and headed out to plan and set up our pajama party.  We were BLOWN away at how quickly our party decorations came together and how awesome they looked!

The Pajama Party wasn’t a surprise, but we knew that it would be a HUGE surprise that our kitchen table had been transformed into a Disney Princess wonderland!  We started by covering the table with the Disney pink tablecloth, and setting each place with a heart shaped Princess Plate, Princess Stadium cups, Disney Princess napkins.

The table was honestly so pretty that it didn’t need much else, but we decorated the table with “loot” from the American Greetings kit used to fill favor bags, and the backs of the chairs and table with the decorations from the American Greeting room decoration kit, and a little bouquet of daisies to top it off!  American Greetings made it SO easy to do this – it took about 15 minutes – so if you are a mom on the go looking for a great way to make your birthday child feel special, head for the American Greetings section at Walmart!

Once we had our table set, it was time to create a cake.  I wanted to create the look of a classic layer cake but have it be breakfast, so pancakes were a natural choice.  I cooked up pancakes (and even dyed them a little pink to match my American Greetings Disney princess decorations), and let them cool, then used a prep bowl (a biscuit cutter would work too) to slice them into even rounds:

Then, it was just a matter of assembly – I stacked the pancakes with a layer of whipped cream in between, and topped with strawberries.  Easy peasy, and set on a Disney Princess Plate, it was the perfect Princess breakfast!

As you can see, my Princess loved her breakfast, and all of the fantastic American Greetings Disney Princess decorations…she kept the crown of course!

What I loved most about this whole experience was how we were able to make Katie feel special and celebrate her day in a quieter way that showed her how much we appreciate and love her!  Following up our breakfast, we snuggled in for a Disney movie!  I think we have definitely started a new family tradition here, thanks to American Greetings!

What birthday celebration traditions do you observe in your family?

Those are making me hungry! We usually let the birthday person plan all 3 meals on their birthday here. I’m sure if those were an option, they’d be on the menu!

At tis stage of the game we really don’t celebrate much-my Mom is going to be 92 and I do take her out for lunch/dinner. All my friends and me–well we are all right around the 65 nark and would prefer not remembering at all-but inevitably jello with whipped cream appears for me!!
