As summer quickly approaches, the time comes when my older daughter travels to Oklahoma each summer to visit with her dad for six weeks, and we miss her terribly, but we always try to work in as many fun summer activities before she goes.  This can be as elaborate as a small vacation, but more often than not we try to plan fun things at home, like picnics or movie nights. So this past week, we headed to Giant Eagle to plan out a fun family barbeque.  And because Coke is such an integral part of my own summer memories as I kid, I knew I wanted to include Coke in our barbeque!

It was REALLY cool to see the huge “Find Your Name” display at Giant Eagle!  The girls were SO excited to see all the different cool sayings that appear on the bottles!

Since Share a Coke was SO awesome last year, Coke brought it back this year, and guys, it’s AWESOME!  There are now 1,000 names featured, and depending on the type of Coke bottle you buy, you can also find cool sayings that will apply to just about any situation or any person you want to Share a Coke with!  If you’re looking for your name, you’ll want to check out the 20 oz bottles of Coke, Diet Coke, or Coke Zero bottles. There are also 6-pack glass bottles and 12 pack cans with general names like Grad, Hero, Friend and Family! Mini-Cans and bottles also feature emoticons and general phrases like “Love”, “Dude” and “Bro”.  2 liter bottles also liven up the party for bigger gatherings!

Honestly, I was so excited to find my name, because I never find my name on anything spelled correctly.  My other daughter also found her name as well!  She wanted to drink her Coke as soon as we left Giant Eagle, but I told her she had to wait until the BBQ.

My girls LOVE ribs so I wanted to definitely include ribs in our barbeque, and I wanted to use Coke in our ribs as well.  And let me tell you – Coke is REALLY good to cook with, and this quick recipe will have your family cheering for more!  And the best part is this meal takes about 30-45 minutes to get on the table – can’t beat that!!

Here’s what you do:

  1. Combine almost all of a 2 liter bottle of classic Coke into a large pot (reserve about a cup for the BBQ sauce), along with 6 cloves garlic, roughly chopped, and a large white onion, quartered. Start the pot to boil while you separate your ribs.
  2. Separate a rack of pork ribs and placed them in the pot so they are covered and boil them about 15 minutes, and then removed them to a plate to go to the grill.
  3. While the ribs were cooking, pour two bottles of your favorite barbecue sauce into a pan, and add a few tablespoons of brown sugar, a few tablespoons of mustard, a 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, the cup of reserved Coke, and a splash of Worchestershire sauce. Warm this up while the ribs are cooking, and then head out to the grill!
  4. Slather your ribs liberally and often, turning them to get a yummy crust and until they are cooked through

Family BBQs are a great time to share laughs, memories, and of course, a Coke with your loved ones.  My girls love our family picnics and barbeques, even if they are only in the backyard.

How will Coke help you create summer memories with your family? Let me know if your name appears on Share a Coke!!
