Have you ever seen a septic line explode? I’d love to say “me neither” but unfortunately I have – and to make it worse it was mine. To make it even worse I was in the direct line of fire when it exploded. There was no warning, no chance at dodging what was to come. One minute I was in my laundry room emptying the dryer and washing a load of clothes and the next I was covered. I won’t go into the gruesome details of what I was covered in – I’ll leave that to your imagination (and tell you to think worse – much, much worse.)
See, up until this event I was under the impression this sort of thing didn’t actually happen. I believed it was something you saw only in movies and commercials. After my gagging and dry heaves stopped I remember thinking “I should have listened to my grandmother.”
My grandmother is over-the-top religious when it comes to her TP. My mother-in-law is too and they both swear by the same bath tissue – Scott Shared Values. If you bring any other brand into their bathroom you better watch out because brooms will be a swinging.
Back to my septic line explosion. When the plumber came (the next day mind you) I had already cleaned up the mess (and taken at least 8 showers.) I had no idea what caused the pipes to bust like that and in my laundry room of all places. The guys bathroom is directly behind the laundry room and the bathroom is where the problem actually started. I won’t go into the details of what the plumber snaked from the pipes, but tons of toilet paper was still in there.
Did you know that not all toilet paper is septic safe? My grandmother and mother-in-law did and I’m mature enough now to say “I wish I had listened to them sooner.” The plumber was on their side as well. We talked for about 20 minutes about what can and cannot get flushed and more than a few gasps were uttered as he was pulling stuff out. Needless to say I’m no longer taking chances with my plumbing (or wallet, because that was way too expensive to risk again.)
I believe in stocking up when it comes to paper goods so when I buy paper towels or toilet paper I opt for the larger packages. Imagine my happy dance when I went shopping and found Vudu coupons on Scott brand paper goods. (See my full shopping trip here) Not only was I able to stock up on my brand of paper supplies, but I got free movies too. Throw in that peace of mind I get knowing I won’t be dealing with exploding septic lines (knock on wood) and I’m beyond thrilled. The paper towels definitely come in handy to clean up any of our messes.
The only hard part when it comes to Vudu is trying to decide what to watch. Since they have movies as soon as they’re released on DVD there’s never a shortage of good entertainment. Since this was a weekend sans kids we had a little more leniency on what we could watch. We went with Mama and Safe Haven and both were great movies. Of course, the fact they were basically free makes them even better. All I had to do was redeem the Vudu coupon here and choose my movie. So simple!
