Our America… a game for all generations

We are on a board game kick lately as we normally get this way at the start of a new school year.  Our homeschooling family has a scheduled sibling time where the kids can play board games or educational toys together while I work with another child.  I know my children are getting board (no pun, I promise) with the same games so I am always on the lookout for something new…if it is educational, it’s even better! We recently received Our America from the makers of the Slinky! Since they pride themselves on there many MADE IN AMERICA products, I think they are a great fit for an “Our America” game – don’t you think?

The Our America Board:

The board is the best part of any good board game and this one is really great.  It is very detailed with the flags of each state as a landing spot, and the date each state was entered into the union above each one.  This is my favorite aspect of the game as the order in which you travel is also the order in which each state was entered into the union (I had no idea Delaware was first! Did you?).  The board alone is great for studying each state’s induction and the differences in each flag.

My kids love that each player receives their own board.  This prevents the standard “direction of the board” argument.

The Our America Categories & Questions:

There are six categories in which questions are asked.  (People, Places & Things; Government & History; Only in America; Presidents & Politicians; Inventors, Authors & Stars; States & Cities)  The first player to reach the “finish line” on their board AND collect a game piece from each of the six categories wins!

My children found “States & Cities” and “Authors & Stars” to be their easiest categories at this time.  The “Authors & Stars” had questions for everyone in there.  My youngest was very pleased to hear “Who plays Hannah Montana?” as a question.

My husband and oldest child found “Inventors” to be their favorite category as this is a topic of interest they share.

My favorite category was Presidents & Politicians. I got most of them wrong, but I love learning about Presidential trivia so, either way I was pleased.

The questions varied from the incredibly simple to the… “what was the question again?” Fortunately, most of them were multiple choice so we could at least provide a slim hope of finding the right answer. The game would be too difficult if this wasn’t an option.

Overall Thoughts and Opinions on Our America:

We had a great time playing the game together this afternoon.  It was a huge success for my bunch- they even played it again, by themselves, without being asked!

It was a great game.. “for all generations”!

Best Feature of Our America:

This game is MADE IS AMERICA!

Our America Bonus:

As a special bonus, they sent us a Slinky to enjoy too!  When I handed it over to my son, he looked at me a little crazy… meanwhile, it has been about four days and it hasn’t left his side!  I told him it was the best toy ever invented (smile).

Right now, they are offering a “It’s Slinky” Sing Along Video Contest Giveaway.  The grand prize winner will have their video featured on the Slinky YouTube channel, Website, Facebook page, and other social media, and an iPad.  Visit their website and watch the video below for more information on this contest.
