Alter Eco Fair Trade Organic Foods

44 Flares 44 Flares ×

I’ve never been much into organic foods. For some reason when I think of it I imagine it all tasting the same – like grass and tree bark. I really don’t know why that was, but it isn’t anymore.

Thanks to Alter Eco my entire outlook on organic foods has changed, and I think I actually prefer organic over non-organic now; especially when it comes to chocolate! I’ll get into why my mind changed in a bit, but first I want to introduce you to Alter Eco.

Who Is Alter Eco

Alter Eco is first and foremost a company with a vision that was set in motion in 1999. The vision of Alter Eco is to provide consumers with quality products while encouraging self sufficiency in its producers and distributors. All of this is done while promoting fair trade and increasing awareness for those in the northern hemisphere. Alter Eco provides a wide array of organic foods, including quinoa, sugar, rice and chocolate.

What We Tried

We were sent a huge selection of products from Alter Eco to try and we weren’t disappointed in any of them! Let’s take a look at what we received.

Chocolate

Dark MintWe received 4 chocolate bars to try. Each one was unique and delicious, and not something you’d buy from the grocery store checkout line.

The chocolate alone was delicate and creamy and none of us wanted to share! The 3 of us grabbed a bar each and opened them.

My choice was obvious – dark mint which made my eyes roll into the back of my head. I was in heaven! John jumped on the coconut chocolate bar and let’s just say he was happy. Ecstatic even. My sons choice left me a little skeptical. He chose the chocolate bar with quinoa. None of us had ever had quinoa so we didn’t know what to expect, but this kid wont touch a homemade smoothie with berries because he doesn’t like seeds.

I was worried it wasn’t going to end well, but lo and behold he clung to that bar like it was the last food on Earth. We all eventually decided to pass our bars around to be able to give honest feedback on each. We all got greedy again because the next taste test was just as good as the first.

The same for the last one. The fourth bar was a mini dark noir bar that I hid until everyone else was in bed! 1 word – delicious! I couldn’t believe something labeled organic could taste that darn good! But, it did and like I said before, I don’t think I’ll ever crave non-organic chocolate again.

Rice.

Ruby Red Rice Alter EcoI love rice, I can live off of the stuff. Normally I just have plain white rice which before was fine for us. I have tried other rices in the past, mostly prepared in an Asian fashion be it at a restaurant or friends’ house. I had never tried to prepare a different type of rice and I was a little intimidated at the idea. But, for the sake of the review (and my family’s dinner needs) I decided to give it a go.

We were sent 2 types of rice: Organic Hom Mali Jasmine Rice and Organic Khao Deng Ruby Red Rice. The first rice I prepared was the Ruby Red Rice; following the directions I sauteed the rice with some olive oil first and then cooked. It was awesome! The Ruby Red Rice has a nutty flavor to it which is not found in your typical white rice. I loved the texture of this rice and I think toasting it first was the key.

When I opened the bag of Jasmine Rice I was blown away by the aroma; it reminded me of buttery popcorn (that could just be me though.) I loved the smell and couldn’t wait to try it. I prepared this rice very similar to how I prepared the Ruby Red Rice, but the taste was completely different. I never would have guessed rice had so many different flavors! The Jasmine Rice has a subtle flavor, but is much firmer and far less sticky than your traditional white rice. I love it!

Quinoa.

Rainbow quinoa Alter EcoAs I said before, we’ve never had anything with quinoa, let alone prepare a dish with it. I was a bit lost, scared and nervous about it. I didn’t know what to expect. We received a box of Organic Royal Rainbow Quinoa – it looked interesting to say the least. But, again for the sake of the review I sucked it up and found a few ideas for what to do with it.

I don’t want to give away the surprise, so I’m going to share the recipe in a separate post soon – I’ll just say it was amazing. Not only is quinoa high in protein, healthy fats, and chocked full of vitamins – it can actually make a meal complete! The variety of textures in the rainbow quinoa was in itself amazing. We’re now fans of Quinoa.

Everything we received was incredible; the company itself is incredible; organic foods are incredible! I am a firm supporter of Fair Trade, and a new found supporter of Alter Eco! I can honestly recommend Alter Eco to anyone interested in the perfect organic foods. You can shop Alter Eco or find out more about them on the Alter Eco website. You can also connect with them on Facebook and Twitter – do that now, you wont be sorry!

After eating organic for 2 years, I think most non organic foods taste like bark. I will have to check out the chocolate though… I highlight different brands and flavors once a week on my blog. Hope you convert to organic!
