Aerobie Megatop Spinning Top Review

Frisbee, yo-yo, jump rope, hacky sack… all of these are great children’s toys that have turned into sports all their own.  Now, thanks to Aerobie, there is another one you can add to the list of great toys that professionals make the rest of us look bad at: The Aerobie Megatop Spinning Top

When the opportunity for this review came up, my oldest son checked out their website and was intrigued with it.  He begged me to request the review for this Megatop!

After I watched the amazing video of children tossing the spinning top back and forth holding the base, throwing the top and completing one-turns, and moving it from various surfaces, I myself thought “WOW that thing is awesome!”

However, when we received ours… we quickly learned that it takes a lot more practice and skill to do what is done in the video. Is this a bad thing?  To have a toy that kids love to play and professionals make look incredibly simple?  I don’t think so, so long as you and your children realize that “those people” are indeed professionals.  And just like football and basketball, it is still just as fun to play those games even if you can’t play as good as they pro’s do.

The top comes with a catching plate, launch string, and spin booster.  We attempted to use our catching plate but could never quite get the top spinning on the plate in order to use it per the recommendations.  The launch string is interesting.  My son launches it using the string. I, however, prefer the old fashioned method of my hands.   I always managed to stop the top using the spin booster… again, my son was able to use this more successfully than I.

My husband and children have enjoyed the use of this top continuously over the extended period we have had it in our home.  He has them all sit around in a circle on the kitchen floor and they all “Oh and Ah, over how long it is able to keep going!” – It is a great way to get rambunctious little ones to sit down for a few minutes.

All and all, although we are not professionals, and not all of us are able to use it according to the package directions, we like it. It is a cute toy that will remind you of the tiny little tops you used to get in the gumball machine when you were a kid.. .only better!
